Professional Practice Environment

Just as Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital has its roots in the apple orchard, the professional practice model is rooted in Kristen Swanson’s Caring Theory as portrayed by the apple tree.  This rendition of the professional practice model represents the dimensions of Swanson’s theory and the values of the nurses at Huron Valley-Sinai.  Knowing, Being with, Doing for, Enabling, and Maintaining Belief are the components of the caring model.  Nurses incorporate the five caring dimensions into their daily interactions and care of patients, families, and the community and into all decision making and practice changes impacting our unit specific care delivery models.  The community, the patient, and the family are dependent on the nurses to deliver care that is compassionate and caring, and demonstrates high quality and positive outcomes.

Shared decision-making encourages control over practice by placing autonomy, responsibility, and accountability with the clinical nurse and is the hallmark of professional nursing at Huron Valley-Sinai as noted in the ANA Standards of Professional Practice and Performance.  Nurses participate in decisions at the bedside as well as at councils such as Professional Nurse Council regarding practice issues, at Quality Council, Magnet Champions, and Evidenced Based Practice forums.

Michigan Public Health Code: The public health code defines the practice and education of nurses in the state of Michigan.

Code of Ethics: Our nurses practice according to the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, practicing with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual.

Professional Standards of Practice:  The ANA standards of professional practice and performance and the ANA principles of staffing are the basis of system-wide policies for the provision of patient care. These professional standards exist as authoritative statements to ensure that the highest quality of care is maintained regardless of the number, experience and competency level of staff and specialty areas. These policies also drive practice on a daily basis.

Evidence-Based Practice:    Exemplary practice must involve the consistent application of knowledge and evidence. The vision is that patient care services would become an evidence-based practice driven environment where nurses have access to and constantly utilize available science to promote achievement of superior clinical outcomes.

Care Delivery Models: The care delivery models are determined by the needs of the patients and the skills of the staff. These methods of providing care include patient focused care, total patient care and team, functional and case management models, and are customized to meet the unique needs of the patients in the care environment.

Professional Development:  Professional development of nurses at all levels is facilitated and supported by the organization.  We believe that professional development is critical in advancing the careers and image of nurses.

Mission, Vision and Values:  The nurses at HVuron Valley-Sinai Hospital have defined their mission as the provision of evidence based, cost-effective care resulting in quality patient outcomes and patient and staff satisfaction.  The nursing vision is to be the leader in our community in providing quality service and cost effective health care.  The values of Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital nurses include respect, compassion, integrity, relationships, autonomy, and accountability.
