The Detroit Medical Center, and DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, conducts a wellness screening visit for our patients in order to identify potential health concerns, and to offer possible resources to patients to help them manage any health risks we identify. During the wellness screening visit, our clinical expert conducts a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation, using height, weight and other factors.
A healthy BMI should be between 18 and 25. If your BMI was calculated to be more than 35, we want to make sure you are aware that this risk factor could be dangerous to your current and future health. In addition, your BMI is used to help predict the chance you could develop serious illnesses.
For patients with a BMI over 35, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital offers a bariatric program which offers both non-surgical and surgical options which can generally correct an abnormal BMI and lead to a healthy weight. Bariatric seminars are offered to educate and discuss conditions associated with obesity, weight loss methods and strategies.
Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital has a Bariatric Nurse Navigator, Laura Kern, RN, BSN, to assist patients on their weight loss journey. For more information and to learn about bariatric seminars, please call (248) 937-3732.
Clinical dieticians are also available for one-on-one nutritional evaluation and counseling. If you wish to set up an appointment with a Registered Dietician, please call (248) 937-5059.
