John Flack, MD

"Handling Hypertension: A Man with a Mission"

Most doctors are able to control only about 4 out of 10 cases of hypertension. But John M. Flack, M.D., M.P.H. and his colleagues at Harper University Hospital have a much more impressive success rate. Seven out of 10 of the hypertensive patients they treat are brought under control. What's more, Dr. Flack is dealing with the toughest cases-most of his patients are referred by doctors who were unable to bring their condition under control. "Our hypertension control rates are higher than anywhere else I'm aware of," he says.

Dr. Flack is nationally and internationally respected for his hypertension research. He is one of 548 clinical hypertension specialists as designated by the American Society of Hypertension. Too modest to bask alone in the limelight, Dr. Flack is quick to credit his team at Harper University Hospital for their success. "I like to use my position to encourage my colleagues," he says.

After graduating from medical school in 1982 at the University of Oklahoma Health Services Center, Dr. Flack stayed on to complete an internal medicine residency and became chief medical resident. He completed a National Institutes of Health fellowship in Cardiovascular Epidemiology, and earned a master's of public health at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Flack has written more than 103 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. He was selected as one of the "Best Doctors in America" in 1998 by publisher Woodward/White. He was recently elected to a two-year term as president of the International Society on Hypertension in Blacks.
