Growth Fuels Demand For Additional Capacity and Services

The Huron Valley-Sinai hospital has experienced enormous growth in its surgical services in the past five years resulting in a 40 percent increase in outpatient surgeries and a 25 percent increase in inpatient cases. The recently completed surgical expansion allows the hospital to continue to meet demand for its services. Surgical capabilities are available in almost all specialties, including:

Cancer Related Procedures: in conjunction with Charach Cancer Treatment Center, a part of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, surgeons perform procedures such as breastbiopsies, brachytherapy and sentinellymph node biopsies that help patientsfight cancer. In addition to their support of the cancer center, theCharach family also made a generouscontribution to the surgical center for the purchase of new equipment.

Ear, Nose, Throat and Oral Surgery: offering advanced endoscopic surgery for nasal and sinus problems, whicheliminates the need for an externalincision and offers greater precision.

Endoscopy:four fully equippedendoscopy suites for colonoscopies, gastroscopies, percutaneous endoscopicfeeding tube placement, enteroscopies,bronchoscopies and endoscopic.

General Surgery:full service surgicalcenter for general surgical proceduresincluding hernia repairs.

Gynecology:complete gynecologicsurgical services including a variety of surgical procedures for the diagnosis of cervical, uterine and ovarian cancer.The hospital also recently recruited a gynecological oncologist allowing for an even broader depth of services.

Neurosurgery:neurosurgeonsperformvarious surgeries to correct brain, spineand nerve disorders such as tumors,epilepsy, birth defects and head injury.

Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital also offers the new procedure Anterior LumbarIntervertebral Fushion (ALIF), a proceduredone to alleviate chronic back pain thathas not responded to non-surgical treatment.

Ophthalmology:advanced ophthalmo-logic surgical procedures are performedusing the latest technology. The hospitalis the first in Michigan to obtainPhacoemulsifier, which surgeons use to break cataract into tiny pieces andthen suction pieces through a very small incision. Prior to obtaining this newequipment, cataracts were removed inone piece, requiring a larger incision,sutures, and more trauma to the eye.

Orthopedics:services include podiatricsurgery, joint replacements, back surgeries and hand surgeries with procedures in place that allow patientsto have a shorter length of stay.Arthroscopic procedures are also avail-able to repair shoulders, elbows, wrists,knees and ankles, including ligamentreconstruction and cartilage repairs.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery:plastic surgeons provide various reconstructive and cosmetic proceduresincluding breast reconstruction andreduction, face lifts and stomach reduction. Services may also be bundledtogether to obtain lower pricing, makingcosmetic enhancements more affordable.

Urology:offering various proceduresincluding Lithotripsy. which breaks down kidney stones inside the bodyusing shockwaves.

Vascular Surgery:vascular surgeonsprovide all types of aortic, renal and visceral reconstructions using the latestsurgical techniques and technology.Additionally, Huron Valley Sinai Hospitalvascular surgeons now perform a minimally invasive procedure for treating varicose veins called Vnus Closure. Unlike removal of the vein, also knownas vein stripping, this procedure requiresno general anesthesia and only takesapproximately 45 minutes.

Laparoscopic Surgery: surgeons alsoperform a variety of laparascopic procedures in various specialties usingsmall incisions of less than one-quarterinch and miniature fiber-optic video cameras dramatically reducing trauma to the body and time spent recovering in the hospital.
