1. Preparing for Surgery

It is extremely important that you make arrangements for a responsible adult to accompany you to the hospital on the day of your surgery. Also plan to have a responsible adult stay overnight with you at your home on the day of the surgery. If a responsible adult is not with you when you arrive at HVSH or cannot stay with you overnight, your operation cannot be performed.

If a change in your physical condition develops prior to surgery, such as a cold, persistent cough, fever, rash or important change in the condition for which you are to have surgery, please notify your physician.

We ask that you follow all instructions given by your physician as well as doing the following things:

  • Perform your normal morning routines, such as showering and brushing your teeth, before you arrive at the hospital;
  • Eat a light meal the evening before surgery;
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight as the day of your surgery approaches unless otherwise notified by HVSH staffers;
  • Do not chew gum or suck on hard candy;
  • You will be advised if you are to take any of your prescription medications the day of the surgery. If instructed, please take them early on the morning of your surgery with a small sip of water;
  • Herbal or diet medications must be discontinued two weeks prior to surgery, as extreme complications can occur when mixed with anesthetic agents;
  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages, or use marijuana or any other "street drug" for 72 hours before or after your operation. These substances may cause a bad reaction when taken with anesthetic agents or other drugs;
  • Please do not smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco products before or after your surgery. Smoking may cause anesthetic problems and increase carbon monoxide in the bloodstream;
  • If you are having surgery on or above your chest, do not wear cologne, perfume, hair spray, make-up, hair gels, creams, lotions, powders or deodorant;
  • All body piercing must be removed prior to surgery.
