Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI)
The Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) device is offered at DMC's Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital is the Discovery* NM 750b from GE Healthcare, and was created with the purpose of detecting abnormalities in breast tissue that might otherwise go unnoticed with traditional mammography.
Molecular Breast Imaging provides functional images of the breast that can help in the early detection of breast cancer, and other potentially harmful abnormalities in the breast tissue. The technique utilizes small semiconductor-based gamma cameras, and a radioactive tracer. The system was designed to replicate the views acquired during mammography, but instead of using x-rays to retrieve images, it utilizes principles of nuclear medicine in detecting the tumor. It is used along with mammograms and other types of examinations when results are inconclusive or additional information is needed. Essentially, this new technology will provide early detection of breast cancer even in women with dense breasts or other issues that might make a mammogram inconclusive.
Mammograms vs. Molecular Breast Imaging
Molecular Breast Imaging is a method of scanning breast tissue that can help overcome the limitations of traditional mammography. Traditional mammograms are taken using x-ray technology that has proven effective in detecting large and potentially cancerous masses, but may not show a marked difference between masses and dense breast tissue, as both appear white on the x-ray. When this dense breast tissue is present, an MBI exam, used in conjunction with the mammogram can help differentiate between healthy (but dense) breast tissue, and potentially diseased tissue. Combining the anatomical images of mammography along with the function (molecular behavior) of the breast tissue examined by MBI, physicians are able to more accurately diagnose patients.
How It Works
Imaging can be performed within five minutes of a small injection of a radioactive tracer, similar to mammography for images of each breast to be collected. Each image may take up to 10 minutes. The high resolution functional images of the breast, together with the anatomical images from traditional mammography, help your doctor to then evaluate the presence of abnormal and potentially diseased breast tissue.
Should I Get a MBI Exam?
Women who are candidates for a Molecular Breast Imaging exam may have:
- Dense breasts
- Indeterminate breast abnormalities with mammography and ultrasound
- Palpable mass with negative mammography and ultrasound
- Women who require breast MRI, however have contraindications such as pacemaker, contrast allergy, read insufficiencies or claustrophobia
- Prior biopsy result with high risk lesions such as LCIS
